Using the YouTube stream/recording integration in MyPages

You can stream a Pexip conference to YouTube and then share links to that conference to any people who are not actively participating in the call. Pexip's tight integration with YouTube means that all of the event setup is handled automatically by Pexip and you do not need to manually create your events within YouTube itself.

This article explains how to set up a YouTube integration for your Pexip Service account, and then how to schedule and record a conference via YouTube, and then how to manage those recordings.

Setting up a YouTube integration

Before you can schedule any recordings with YouTube, you must first set up your YouTube integration (this is a one-time step per YouTube account).

YouTube prerequisites

Before you set up your YouTube integration, you must ensure that you have a verified YouTube account, and that the account is enabled for live events.

  1. From your YouTube account settings page, select Channel status and features (www.youtube.com/features).
  2. If your Account status is not verified, select Verify and follow the YouTube instructions.
  3. Ensure that your account is enabled for Live streaming.

Note that enabling your first live stream may take up to 24 hours.

Adding a YouTube integration

You can now add a YouTube integration via the Pexip web app:

  1. Go to pexip.me and log in with your account.
  2. Select the menu in the top-right corner of the Pexip web app and select Live events & recordings.

If the Live events & recordings option is not available, contact your account manager at your local certified Pexip Partner to enable you for RTMP or YouTube streaming & recording integration.

  3. Select Manage integrations.

  4. Select Add YouTube account. This forwards you to a login page.

  5. Choose the Google account you want to log in with. This must be a verified YouTube account that is enabled for live streaming.
  6. After logging in, vp.vc asks for permission to access your Google account. Select Allow.
  7. You can add more YouTube accounts if required.

After you have set up your integration you can then stream and record conferences from any VMR that you control. You can schedule an event in advance or perform ad hoc recordings/streaming during a conference.

Scheduling an event

Scheduling an event is useful if you want to share a link in advance with your streaming/recording audience who are not participants in the call. It also provides a reminder to you in advance of the event, when you go to the Pexip app, that you need to start the streaming/recording.

To schedule an event/recording with YouTube in advance:

  1. Go to pexip.me and log in with your account.
  2. Select the menu in the top-right corner of the Pexip web app and select Live events & recordings.
  3. Select Schedule Event.

    • If you’ve enabled Custom (RTMP) for live events and recording, you’ll need to select your YouTube account before you can select which VMR you want to use.
    • If Custom (RTMP) has not been enabled, selecting Schedule event takes you directly to the room selection page.
  4. If you can control more than one VMR you need to select which room you want to stream/record and select Next.
  5. Select the Date and Time for the event. Enter a Title and Save changes. When done, click Finish.

The list shows you if the room has been booked for any streaming/recording events by anyone else, or if you’ve booked any other stream/recording events on the same day.

  6. You are redirected to a page where you can find your scheduled event’s links/information for meeting participants and live streaming audience.

A scheduled event does not automatically start recording/streaming. You still have to manually start (and stop) your event from within the Pexip app.

Starting and stopping a recording

When you have set up a stream/recording integration, you can create, start and stop your scheduled recordings from within the Pexip app for your VMR (or any other VMR that you control), and you can also perform ad hoc streaming and recording while you are in a call.

Starting a scheduled recording from the Pexip web app (before the meeting starts)

You can use the Pexip web app to start and stop a scheduled recording prior to the meeting:

  1. Go to pexip.me and when you are ready to start the recording of the meeting, select Start now.

During the setup process the VMR will start connecting to YouTube.

It might take a minute or two for the recording to begin. There will also typically be a 10-30 second delay between what you see in the room and what you see in the stream.

  2. When you are done, select End.

  3. Select More details to find the link to your recording.

Starting a scheduled recording from the Pexip desktop app

You can also use the Pexip desktop app to start and stop a scheduled recording, either from within the VMR or without joining if there are other participants currently in the VMR:

  1. Open the participants list .
  2. Select Start now.

  3. When you are done, select End.

Ad hoc streaming and recording (from within the meeting)

You can perform ad hoc streaming and recording from within the Pexip web app or the Pexip desktop app. To start and stop an ad hoc recording while you are in a meeting:

  1. Open the participants list .
  2. Select Stream/record now.

  3. If you have enabled YouTube and custom RTMP integrations you are asked to select which type of integration you want to use.

This step is skipped if you only have one integration enabled.

  4. The stream is initiated and the VMR starts connecting to YouTube.

    ... and then becomes live.

It might take a minute or two for the recording to begin. There is also typically a 10-30 second delay between what you see in the room and what you see in the stream.

  5. When you are done, select End.

A Stopping stream/recording message is displayed, followed by Stream/recording stopped.

  6. You can select Clear to remove the message or More details to find the link to your recording.

Privacy settings for YouTube events

All YouTube events are set to unlisted by default, which means your events can only be seen and shared by anyone with the link. You can change this manually through YouTube’s dashboard after you’ve started the event if you want to make your event public.

Managing past and future events

You use the Live events & recordings option within MyPages to schedule new events, see which events you have already scheduled, and to review all of your past events (both scheduled and ad hoc).

For each past and future event you can access links to that conference for sharing with your colleagues, and review the recordings of completed conferences.
